Miles of fast, flat rural roads and coastal shoreline are the ideal location for hosting sporting events of all sorts.
Hosting in a small rural area provides participants the low-key, friendly and supportive environment not always available with larger events.

Tour de Chesapeake
May 16, 2026| For 27 years, cyclists come to peddle the flat, windy, backroads of Mathews County with bike routes totaling over 100 miles.

The Islander Regatta
June 27, 2026 | Circumnavigating one of Virginia’s few inhabited islands – Gwynn’s Island – test your limits in this 9 mile paddle event crossing through 3 bodies of water!

Wharf to Wharf Swim
August 15, 2026 | Calling all salt water fish! Join this fundraiser sporting event that challenges swimmers to a 1 mile swim across the calmer waters of the East River.

Mathews Marathon, Half & Relay
October 17, 2025 | Want to have bragging rights in the world’s flattest race course? Participate in this newly certified Boston Qualifying event!

4 Foot Roadside Shoulders
Let’s widen roadway shoulders where rumble strips are present
Mathews County needs wide, 4 foot shoulders along main roadways to ensure the safety of non-automobile traffic. Support the cause!!
Mathews Blueways Trails
In 2025, the Mathews Outdoor Club launched a project to upgrade the existing Mathews Blueways Trail locations.
The goals of this project are to address information kiosks, visitor usage and exposure.
Multiuse Trails in Mathews
A long term dream and ambition of the Mathews Outdoor Club is to spearhead public multiuse trails for the community.
We are exploring opportunities to implement this in the County’s long-term planning.
